The Mercedes car was owned by Karl Benz (Carl in french). He was the German engineer and businessman who designed the world’s first internal combustion engine automobile. Karl was born on the 25th of November 1844 in Muhlburg, Karlsruhe, Germany in a poor family. His full name was Karl Friedrich Michael Vaillant.

His father Mr. Johann George Benz was passed away when Karl was only two years old. He passed away in a railway accident. After the father’s death, the whole burden of the house and Karl’s care was on his mother Mrs. Josephine Vaillant’s shoulders. She tried to provide him the best education.

Education of Karl Benz

Karl studied at the local grammar school in Karlsruhe and was an eccentric student. In 1853, at the age of nine, he started in a scientifically oriented Lyceum. Then he enrolled in poly-technical university and studied under the Ferdinand Redtenbacher.

Karl originally focused his studies on locksmithing but eventually followed his father’s footsteps toward locomotive engineering. At the age of fifteen in 1860 he took the admission in the University of Karlsruhe after passing the entrance exam. At the age of 19, he was graduated from the university on 9 July 1864. 

Karl Benz Dream

Karl was fond of riding his bicycle, and he dreamed of making a fully mechanized automobile, or “horseless carriage”. He worked in a number of engineering jobs but found none that satisfied him. He took seven years of professional training in several companies. Training began at Karlsruhe with two years of various jobs at a mechanical engineering company. Later he shifted toward Mannheim to work as a draftsman and designer in a scales factory and in 1868 he went to Pforzheim to work for a bridge construction company. 

Karl’s Discoveries and works

In 1871 in Mannheim, he founded an Iron Foundry and Sheet Metal Workshop with his partner August Ritter. Business went into trouble. The first year of the venture was a complete disaster. Ritter became unreliable and the local authorities seized the business. Then he bought Ritter’s share in the company using a dowry provided by his fiancée, Bertha Ringer’s father.

Karl and Bertha were married on 20 July 1872 and had five children: Eugen, Richard, Clara, Thilde and Ellen

Despite such commercial misfortune, Carl Benz led the development of new engines. Karl began to develop various parts of the vehicle that he had imagined. including ignition, spark plugs, gear, carburetor, water radiator, and clutch. He focused all his efforts on creating a reliable gasoline two-stroke engine. On December 31, 1878, Karl abolished its two-stroke engine on New Year’s Eve, and in 1879 a patent was provided for it.

His invention was amazing but the problem shows its usefulness to the world. This type of thing was never there before and people saw no use for it, nor did they find it practical. This situation was dealt with tactfully by Bertha; In 1888, he threw the car into his mother’s house in Pforzheim. Traveling a 106 kilometers distance.

It was done without her husband’s information and she only informed her safe arrival through telegram when she reached. This was the first long-distance journey that was ever tried and changed public opinion about the safety and practicality of the means of transportation. Karl Benz’s Business expansion of company (Benz and Cia)

The Karl set to improve the car’s features, connecting brake lining and additional gear for driving on the slope. Sales began, and their cars received tremendous publicity and appreciation at the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris. Demand increased and accordingly the production facilities were expanded. The number of employees increased from 50 to 430 in 1899.

Due to its size, in 1899, Benz & Cie became a joint-stock company with the arrival of Frederick Von Fischer who were boarded as members of the management board. New directors recommended that Karl should make less expensive automobiles for mass production. In 1893, Karl Benz made Victoria a two-passenger automobile with a 3-hp engine, which can reach a top speed of 11 mph and a pivot front axle powered by a roller-chained tiller for steering.

Karl and Bertha started a series of companies at the beginning of 1900 and maintained their position as major automobile producers in Europe. By 1904, Benz and Cie had sales of 3,480 automobiles and the company was the leading manufacturer of automobiles. By the 1920s, however, there was intense competition between Benz and Daimler- the Mercedes engine manufacturers. The cost of production was rising due to inflation and sales were increasing for both companies. 

In 1924, the two companies signed a “Mutual Interest of Agreement”, which led to joint production, marketing, purchasing, and advertising efforts, but each company still retained its own brand name. Finally, in 1926, the two companies merged with Daimler-Benz and started producing Mercedes-Benz cars, as we know them today.

Benz’s sons, Eugen and Richard, left Benz & Cie in 1903. But Richard returned to the company in 1904 as a designer of passenger vehicles.

Karl Benz became a board member of the newly established company and remained for the remainder of his life. 

Karl & Bertha Benz Death

The merger proved beneficial. In 1927, the number of units was tripled to 7,918 and diesel line was started for truck production. In 1928 Mercedes Benz SS was entered.

At the age of 84 on April 4, 1929, Karl Benz died from Bronchial Inflammation in his lungs at home in Ladenburg. At the age of 95 until her death on 5 May 1944, Bertha Benz lived in her last home. Other family members lived in the house for thirty more years. Benz Homes is now designated as Historic and is used as a scientific meeting facility for a non-profit foundation.

Ferruccio Lamborghini the founder of the Lamborghini car was born on 28 April 1916. In Renazzo, a little village near Bologna, Italy. He belonged to a poor family. Ferruccio Lamborghini parents were the farmer who grew grapes to make the wine. But Ferruccio soon decided that he wanted to do something with mechanics. 

Education of Ferruccio

He started working on his father’s tractor Ferruccio played with a lot of agricultural equipment and invented a lot. One of the inventions made by them burned the entire farm. Later that Ferruccio was then sent to a technical school so that he could accept more machinery. 

When he grew up, his parents arranged for him to go to an industrial college in Bologna. After a few years, he graduated with a degree in industrial engineering and started working in a repair workshop. 

Work and Experience

During World War II, he was recruited to the Italian Air Force in 1940  to working for transportation sections. Where he served as a mechanic in the Italian garrison on Rhodes Island, being a supervisor of the vehicle carrying unit. 

He became a prisoner of war by the British military forces after 1944. That had kept him to work in his motoring department, in this way. Ferruccio had the experience of having cars on the road for the first time, even with limited supplies.

He married Clelia Monti, but his wife died in 1947 while she was giving birth to the child a boy named Tonio. 

Later Second World War

He returned to his hometown after the war and opened a garage in Pieve di Cento. Where he started converting old war surplus material into tractors needed for local farmers, Lamborghini tractor business was started in a small garage, but the business became really successful and soon thereafter had to move to larger campuses. 

By now Ferruccio had also started tuning Fiat cars; He actually built a Fiat Topolino for himself and entered the Mig Miglia competition in 1948. Ferruccio modified an old Fiat Topolino he had bought in his time. His involvement ended after 1,100 kilometres when he drove the car to a restaurant in the city piano of Turin. Unfortunately, the car was ruined in the accident.

Starting of the Business

The Italian manufacturer decided to form a Lamborghini company with the target of competition with the Enzo Ferrari. It all began after the Second World War when a man gets a Ferrari sports car, in which he noticed that the clutch components were what they used on their tractors. 

For such reasons, he decided to visit Enzo Ferrari to tell him about the problems he had with his car; he could not find a solution, so he decided to make a better sports car than Ferrari. The man was Ferruccio Lamborghini. To serve its purpose, Ferruccio founded the company “Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini” in May 1963 and hired former Ferrari engineers Gianpolo Dallara and Robert Wallace to design and develop their cars.

The first car manufactured in the company was the Lamborghini 350 GT. It was far better in terms of Ferruccio’s Turin faults. The year 1967 came, and Miura was praised by all the elite media, the prototype taking the brand to a higher level of success. 

His name is due to the Spanish bullfighting livestock as the founder of Lamborghini was fond of bullfighting and hence the brand’s logo. Apart from all their cars, all his car names on these animals.

His Business

During the 1970s, Ferruccio Lamborghini’s companies suffered from financial difficulties.  In 1971, the Lamborghini Trattori, which exported nearly half of its production of tractors, when the South African importer canceled all its orders. 

In 1972, he made major investments to improve the production capacity of his factory, so that a large-scale order from South America could be followed. Sometime later, Lamborghini was informed that the order had been canceled, so the Italian was forced to sell a part of his company to get some of the money spent back.

In the same year, Georges-Henry Rosetti joined the company. In 1973, Ferruccio Lamborghini sold part of the company that was still held by Rene Leimer. 

After Life

In 1974, Lamborghini left the industrial world and retired to a 3 km² (740-acre) property called “La Fiorita” on the shores of Lake Trasimeno in Castiglione del Lago, a town in the region of Umbria in central Italy. 

Later Ferruccio Lamborghini went to live in the vineyard. It was bought a few years ago and enter into the agriculture work. Ferruccio delighted in hunting and making his own wines. Lamborghini also designed his golf course to manage several business interests.

At the age of 76 on 20 Feb 1993, Ferruccio passed away in Silvestrini Hospital in Perugia after getting a heart attack fifteen days ago after a heart attack.

Austin Coulson’s car.

Phoenix native Austin Coulson had a dream to make this car. According to the Guinness World Records website, the car is 25 inches high, 2 feet 1.75 inches wide and 4 feet 1.65 inches long. Coulson made the small beast in his garage, incorporating the body of a ‘57 Chevy Bel Air into the construction. He additionally used the engine, transmission, and drivetrain from a road-legal quad. It can not go over 25mph speed.

This small vehicle is full of features that you would normally associate with a traditional size ride: 9 inches by headlights, taillights, turn signals, rearview mirrors, seatbelt, a horn, and a 3-inch windshield. Peel P50 is one of the world’s smallest cars which is designed by Peel Engineering in 1962-1965 and remanufactured in 2010. It is a three-wheel car It is so small in fact, that it held the title of Guinness Book of World Record for the “smallest production car” for over 50 years. The Vintage Peel P50 is a great collector’s item with the character: it has no reverse gear, but a light car (250 lbs) can be picked up and carried if you want.  This small car holds the World Record for the smallest car for half a century. With a door and a headlight, Peel Engineering believes it is a symbol of automotive minimalism. Its speed can reach up to 38 mph. BMW Isetta is a little car which length is 90 inches and width is 54.30 inches. This smallest car is manufactured by the BMW company from 1955-1962. The 1958 Mopetta – the final version, unfortunately – was 1.70 meters long and 0.88 meters wide. Its weight was only 78 kg. Only 14 Mopettas were built, and today only 5 are known to with the time. The next engine to achieve any considerable prominence was Samuel Browns, who acquired several patents in England in 1825.

His engine did not represent an advance, as Huygen’s old ideas were employed rather than advanced views of the Street. The success of the atmospheric steam engine was probably responsible for this. Brown’s engine included several large chambers. In which hot gases are cooled by flame, by injection of water, thus a partial vacuum is formed. Pistons to operate in cylinders adjacent to large chambers were driven by atmospheric pressure, all pistons being linked to the same crankshaft.

Since the burning cylinder was not in work, the engine can be called an internal combustion engine in the accepted sense of the word. The inventor appears to be a man of considerable force, and many of his engines were built for pumping and driving cars and boats.

Wright’s Engine

In 1833, Wright invented in England, the engine. In which gas and air were supplied to a working cylinder by separate pumps. The charge was contained in spherical bulbs near the ends of the cylinder, ignition occurs when the piston is at the end of the stroke. The engine was double acting, water-jacketed, with a poppet exhaust valve and fly-ball governor. It represented a great advance in design and was probably made, although no record of its performance exists.

William Barnet Engine

In 1838, William Barnett patented an engine in England that was an advance on earlier variants in that country. It compresses the gas and air separately, igniting the mixture when the piston was at the end of its stroke. The third engine described by this inventor is interesting. Because it embodies many features of modern two-cycle engines. 

The piston is supposed to be moving upward, compressing the mixture of gas and air. Ignition occurs when the piston has reached its highest position, and the piston went down, expansion occurs until the piston crosses the exhaust port in the middle of the cylinder. During the latter half of the stroke, the pumps force gas and air into space below the piston. Compression being completed by the working piston and an explosion when the piston reaches its lowest position.

Barsanti and Matteucci Engine

The engine of the Barsanti-Matteucci engine was made in 1857. This is interesting because it shows a type of machine that was the first to achieve real commercial success. However, this does not happen for his Italian inventions.

In this engine the gas and air exploded under the piston, which was operated upward, finally came to rest when all the work of the blast was done. The piston did this descending under atmospheric pressure. 

Lenoir’s Engine

The engine in 1860 invented by Lenoir in France was the first engine to attain considerable use. In general, it was a double-acting steam engine, with a slide valve for entry and another for exhaust.

It was considered sufficient merit to secure the awards from the Exposition of London in 1862, Paris in 1867 and Vienna in 1873. improvement in the engine gave its inventor some prominence, but its success was Ephemeral, as the new Otto-Langen free-piston engine. Which was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition in 1867? 

The Lenoir engine recruited gas and air for part of the stroke, which was followed by an explosion and then an extension. In 1860, Beau de Rochas stated the necessary conditions for the efficiency of internal combustion engines as follows:

  • The largest volume of a cylinder with a given surface of the circumference.
  • The higher the possible velocity of the motion.
  • Largest possible expansion.
  • The largest possible pressure when the expansion begins.

Otto Engine

The famous Otto engine was invented by Dr. Nicholas Otto and was patented in 1877 in Germany. This follows the cycle described by Bue de Rocha, now known as the four cycles, or sometimes as the Otto Cycle. The engine was previously known as Otto-Silent, separating it from the free-piston engine, which was noisy.

It immediately installed an internal-combustion engine on firm-footing, and the four-cycle type engines sold today show only minor improvements. In 1876 the sliding valve is replaced by poppet valves. And the spark of electricity has been replaced by flame ignition. Otherwise, the Otto cycle of 1876 continued and thousands of them are currently being formed.

The development of diesel engines for oil in 1894. As stated, this engine is similar to the Brayton. The air is compressed to about 500 pounds of pressure and the oil is sprayed into this highly compressed air. It burns spontaneously under almost constant pressure, followed by a long extension. But the topic does not end here you should check complete sensors, wiring harness, valve covers, charge pipes, fuel rail, and injectors, also check their important functions are working or not, like starter, AC compressor, power steering pump, and alternator. 

Also, ask about the history of the engine, how many kilometers the engine has run, is the engine faced an accident or not when was the last time it has run and many more questions that comes in your mind. These questions will help you to guess the actual condition of the engine. And the important thing to remember does not buy the engine in which standard mileage is below 20000 kilometres per year.

Ask the seller is the engine has long block or short block.

Both the engines are the same in size but there are some differences, which we will tell you.

Short Block Engine.

The Short Block engine is the end of a vehicle’s engine. It is a partially assembled engine that has the cylinder block below the head gasket but above the oil pan. It includes crank, engine block, connecting rods and pistons. This engine has a focus on the bottom and end rotating components.

Long Block Engine

Long Block engine is the complete version of the short block engine that includes valve train, cylinder head, valve covers, crankshaft and cylinder head, and other components. It does not require the fuel system components such as fuel pump, fuel injector, and intake manifold. This is the completely assembled engine.

Comparison Long Block v/s Short Block engine

A short block engine has less price than a long block engine, long block engine has a longer warranty than a short block engine. The long block engine is more reliable than the short block engine because it has more components. And final result come out the long block engine is more powerful than the short block engine because their more components support them to be powerful

So try as much as possible to buy a long block engine but to buy a short block engine is not too bad.

Always try to check the used engine in the morning cold weather (it is also known as cold checking), because the engine was at eight or nine hours at rest. Cold investigation can display all hidden problems.

If the engine starts in two or three takes it means that it is in good condition, if do not start more than three trials, do not waste your money on it.

Bad quality oil usage, old engine, bad valve cover gasket, and high-pressure oil usage are the reasons which force the engine to consume excess oil.

Check the oil leakage in the engine properly.

The engine is the heart of the vehicle and the engine oil is the blood, just think if your heart not pumping your blood properly what will happen the same thing is with the engine. Avoid the engine if there is a low level of oil. Check the engine carefully under the oil cap after removing it.

To check the oil leakage in the engine, keep your eyes on the dipstick and check the overflow or low level of oil. When you pull out the dipstick and see there is a lot of black carbon in it that means the engine has not passed from good services. Oil Pressure Testing is necessary to check the clearance flow of oil. Check the lower part of the engine, everything has to be dry.

Basic Engine Test

All types of tests are necessary to do and the Basic Engine Test is one of them.

  1. Check for sludge in the oil. If you see sludge outside of your engine it is a problem. Remove the oil cap of the oil pan, turn on the light of your mobile or torch and see inside it. Do not buy the engine if you see the metallic and a silver portion of the engine it is a sign of sludge engine. A good engine will always be covered with lubrication oil.
  2. While performing the cold test with engines try to listen carefully. If you listen to abnormal sounds like two metals are colliding with each other, refuse to buy.
  3. Open the engine hood for checking,
  • Air cleaner clogging.
  • Hoses for leaks
  • Gasket and valves
  • Improper connections of harness connectors, wiring harness, and vacuum hoses.
  • Refuse to buy if you smell like burnt oil.

Make sure the engine getting normal temperature while running not getting over. If your engine is overheating in normal weather that means the coolant system of your engine is damaged and not exhausting the heat. If the needle on the temperature gauge pushes its way towards the red zone it may be a sign of overheating.

Don’t forget to check the exhaust fan and other fans are working properly or not. Improper working of fans can create many problems like overheating.

Unusual vibration in the engine may be harmful to your vehicle. About this, we have already told you in Basic Engine Test this sound can be the collision of metal in your engine and can damage internal parts soon.

If you find some little problem in the engine tells the seller immediately to repair or replace the faulty part.

Check from Borescope Inspection Camera

Borescope camera will help you to detect the internal failure of the engine’s parts and components such as bearings and pistons. 

Are your components clean or not? Is there is excess carbon or not? All you can see on the screen of the Borescope. Put the wire in parts from were light blue light is emitting and it will display internal conditions of components. If you have not this, you can purchase it from the market.

Spark Plug Inspection.

Increasing high voltage and the gap of the bridge between the ground electrodes and the center can spark the fire inside the cylinder. And the secondary purpose of Spark Plug Inspection is helping the heat away from the cylinders.

 If you see red coating in the spark plugs, this is not a problem. But the spark plug gets too hot that is the sign of pre-ignition damage.

Check Compression on your engine.

It will check the condition of your cylinder. If the engine has low compression it causes may be Holes in a piston, worn timing chain which is connected to the crankshaft and camshaft, bad piston rings (due to overheating of the engine).

This test will help you to detect the leakage of pressure from rings, cylinders, and valves.

While checking the compression, your engine pressure should be 100 PSI (Pressure per Square Inch), if it is showing the 10% variation around 100 PSI this is not the issue.

Check the coolant and the other leakages.

If you see the coolant leakage from the radiator tell the seller to remove it and place the new radiator. Because sometimes a broken or cracked radiator can create unwanted serious problems. To avoid these situations refuse to buy or remove.

Tell your sellers, you want to check your engine dry because some of the sellers use automatic transmission fluid and thick oil to conduct the compression test successfully which is temporary.

Now you have completely checked the functions of the used engine. But one thing is still left.
