Peel P50 is not only a world’s slowest car and ultra-compact car but also the smallest car in the world, only one person can sit inside it. This car was designed by the Peel Engineering (headquarter in the Isle of Man)  in 1962 to 1965 and its remanufacturing was started in 2010.

Mia Electric Car

This Mia Electric car was made in France by German based company. It was the first electric model on the market. The production of Mia Electric was started in June 2011 and sent to market for the commercial use and sale but for some financial problems its production was stopped in December 2013. In March 2014, the Tribunal de Commerce de Niort placed the company in judicial liquidation.

The small Mia electric is a three-seater car, with two sliding doors and the driver’s seat is stationed in the center. The manufacturer says that it gives better all-round visibility. Also, a lot of space has been given for mounting the smartphone, laptop, GPS device and the music player on either side of the driver.

The Hindustan Ambassador is a five seater sedan automobile which is manufactured by the  Hindustan Motors of India and its production was started in 1958 Hooghly, West Bengal and Sriperumbudur near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It was based on Morris Oxford 3rd series and was designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom from 1956 to 1959 by Morris Motors limited.

Engine Cooling System in Automobiles

Continuously running a car or an automobile can heat up the engine, and reach up to its extreme position beyond your thinking. According to the study, in engine cylinders the temperature of the burning gases can reach up to 1773.15K – 2273.15K (1500°C – 2000°C). It is more than the temperature and Melting Point of Platinum (1768°C) and Titanium (1668°C), which can oxidize the lubrication oil inside the engine and deposit carbon on the surface. 

The amount of heat delivered to the cylinder walls is too high. If the heat is not removed from the cylinder, it results in seizing the piston, high fuel consumption, pre-ignition and burning of lubricants, etc.

Only 30% of heat is used by the engine to convert into mechanical work, where 30% heat is useless and 40% heat exhausted by the exhaust fans. Not all heat generated by fuel combustion in engine cylinders is converted into useful power in the crankshaft. Thus to remove the excess heat from the engine cylinder a cooling system is used.

A system in the engine which is used to maintain the temperature or excess heat is known as the cooling system of the engine. When the engine is hot, it must remove the heat at a rapid rate. At the beginning of the engine, the engine cooling should be very slow so that the different working parts can reach their operating temperature in a few time.

Types of cooling systems in Cars

Two types of cooling systems are used in the engine.

  1. Air Cooling System
  2. Water Cooling System

Car Air Cooling System

Air cooling systems are typically used in small engines up to 15–20 kW. In these types of systems, the heat conducted by the outermost parts of the engine is radiate and the air is driven away from the stream. Thich is obtained from the atmosphere. An air-cooled engine is simpler to create than a water-cooled engine because heat is transferred directly from the cylinder and head to the air.

When the automobile is normally driven at sufficient speed to provide sufficient wind speed to transfer heat. The whole cooling system is only the fins on the air-cooled engine. The air-cooled engine has a fan or blower, to improve the airflow in the rear of the wings adequately, with the small or slow movement of air.

As you know the air cooling system usually uses in a small automobile such as scooters, motorcycles, small car engines and also provides in some small industrial engines, where the forward speed of the machine gives good velocity to cool the engine. 

Air Cooling System Advantages

  • It has low manufacturing prices.
  • It doesn’t require high maintenance.
  • This doesn’t contain liquid coolant, so there will be no problem like leakage and freezing.
  • The engine has light in weight because it has no cooling pipe radiator, fan pump, and liquid cooling jacket.
  • Installation, assembling, disassembling of the engine is easy and simple.

Air Cooling System Disadvantages

  • The cooling of the engine is non-uniformly.
  • In comparison to the water cooling system, it is less efficient.
  • This generates aerodynamic noises.
  • It can only be used for short-sized engines, because of its small capacity for heat wastage.

Car Engine Water Cooling System

In the water cooling system, water is circulated via the water jacket around each valve seats, valve stems and combustion chamber. The water-cooled engine block and cylinder head have reciprocating cooling channels. All channels at the top of the cylinder head converted to a single outlet.

This removes excessive heat generated in the engine and protects it from overheating and keeps the engine at working temperature for efficient and economical work.

The water continuously moves by a centrifugal water pump which is operated by V-belt from the pulley on the engine crankshaft. It drives hot coolant from the engine to the radiator, a form of the heat exchanger. After passing from the radiator, water is poured into the drain and the water is pumped through the cylinder inlet route.

Thermosyphon Water Cooling System

This system works on the principle that the hot water has lower density and rises up, and cold water is being heavier that goes down.

In these types of systems, the radiator kept at the upper level than the engine for easy flow of water towards the engine. This is how hot water in the water jacket rises and goes over the radiator. From where it passes and cools, and is collected in the bottom tank. In these systems, the rate of supply is too low.

Impeller Circulation Cooling System

This is an updated version of the thermosyphon cooling system. The main motive of the impeller cooling system is to provide the right regulation, capable of the maximum engine cooling pump efficiency. And it is all the same except that it has a small impeller unit powered by the engine to increase the circulation rate of water.

Pump Circulation Water Cooling System

This system has the same construction as the thermosyphon cooling system except that it uses a centrifugal pump for circulating water in a water jacket and radiator.

It is a modern system of water cooling in which water is circulated effectively by cylinder block to the radiator. And come back via a centrifugal pump driven by the engine V-belt.

Pressurised Water Cooling System

This is an updated version of the pump circulation cooling system. In this, you will get the special radiator cap with a spring-loaded pressure valve and a vacuum valve. This cap becomes gas-tight when the engine gets heat, water vapour is formed and is not allowed outside by the cap. 

Therefore a boiling point of water is raised in the system. So that the working temperature of the engine also increases, higher temperature gives better thermal efficiency.

As the coolant temperature increases, the setpoint of the variable pressure relief valve. Also increases and the system relief pressure automatically varies with the coolant temperature over a range of pressures whose upper limit is enough greater than the set point of the relief valve in the pressure cap so that the maximum system operating pressure is still finite by the pressure cap.

Water Cooling System Advantages

  • The water-cooling system is efficient as compared to the air-cooling system.
  • Cylinder, cylinder head, and valve’s uniforming cooling, it is different from the air cooling system.
  • Water-cooled engines have lower fuel consumption than air-cooled engines.
  • Water-cooled engines do not require a more frontal area.
  • If we install a water cooling system, there is no need for an engine on the front end of the moving automobile.
  • The cooling system can be easily stationed anywhere on the automobile. In some vehicles, it is at the rear, while in air-cooled engines, this is not possible.
  • The engine is less noisy than an air-cooled engine, as it has water for soaking noise.

Water Cooling System Disadvantages

  • The water cooling system needs pure water to work properly.
  • It totally depends on the supply of water.
  • The water pump which supplies the water absorbs a lot of energy.
  • In the case of cooling system failure, the engine may suffer severe damage.
  • Water coolant system requires regular maintenance, its parts require more maintenance.
  • The Water cooling system is expensive because it has many parts.

Bugatti cars are one of the fastest and very expensive cars in the world, and to make this car a world’s famous brand its owner Ettore Bugatti had done very hard work to reach this position. 

The original name of Ettore Bugatti was Ettore Arco Isidoro Bugatti. Ettore was a great Italian-French entrepreneur and automobile designers like Karl Benz and Ferruccio Lamborghini. And why he is known as an Italian-French entrepreneur we will tell you in this. Ettore is one of the most famous and well-known members of the list of successful entrepreneurs. He was born in Milan, Italy on the 15th of September in 1881. 

His Family

Ettore Bugatti belonged to an artistic family. Because his father Carlo Bugatti and his mother Teresa Lorioli both were Art Nouveau Furniture & Jewelry Designer, his younger Rembrandt Bugatti was a famous animal sculpture, and his father Giovanni Luigi Bugatti was a good architect and sculptor. While Ettore himself became an engineer and designer of luxurious automobiles.

Early Life and Career

In 1898 at the age of 17, he joined the bicycle and tricycle manufacturing company of Preneti and Stucci for the internship, where he made his first vehicle, a motorized tricycle operated by two engines made by De Dion for his first race. It was a circle trip from Verona to Mantua and back to Verona.

This extraordinary feat was soon followed by his first automobile in 1900. The outstanding construction method had been supported by Count Gulinelli, who saw the talent that the young engineer associate degree future manufacturing business was developing from such an early age. The project also won the young Ettore Award.

Ettore talent was also recognized by others, so on July 2, 1901, he got the job of technical director at the De Dietrich plant. Ettore Bugatti evolved a second prototype which was an award-winning exhibition at the Milan Trade Fair in the spring of 1901. In 1907, Bugatti was nominated as a Production Director with Detz.

During World War I

After the completion of the project in 1909, he ended his contract with Deutz. Despite being born in Italy, Bugatti owns his famous automobile company, the Automobiles E. Bugatti in Molsheim in the town of Germany at the Alsace region where he began manufacturing of the Bugatti T13. 

At that time the Alsace was German territory, it became French in 1919 and was annexed by Germany during World War II and later occupied by France in 1944 and he got the french citizenship in 1947. So that’s why Ettore Buggati is known as the Italian-French entrepreneur.

During the subsequent years, the recently established Bugatti automobile producing continued to expand, Ettore conjointly developing many alternative further projects together with the Bebe model for Peugeot. Bugatti style licenses were conjointly bought by Diatto in Torino, Rabag from Düsseldorf and Crossley from Manchester, Great Britain.

When the First World War began, the Bugatti moved back to Milan and then Paris with his family. While displaced from his home in Alsace in World War I. Bugatti started design airplane engines with 8 and 16 cylinders. During the wars, Ettore Bugatti designed a successfully motorized railcar dubbed the Autorel Bugatti and won a government contract to make an airplane, the Model 100.

The Type 13, which was sold between 1910 and 1920, had a 1.6L engine and a 4-valve head that was personally designed by Ettore. The car gets the second position in 1911 at Le Mans in a seven-hour-long race. His cars won him at Le Mans in 1920 and Brescia in 1921, winning three times thereafter. The winning streak continues, reaching over 400 victories by 1925.

Decline of Bugatti

Beginning in 1933, Bugatti began to build railcars using Royale engines and other car parts. During the 1950s, a total of 85 railway personnel were created. His son Jean was already actively involved in the company and he was a very talented engineer.

Ettore Bugatti is the only car manufacturer that managed to combine tradition, innovation, and creativity into just one car model. In 1934, Ettore began producing the infamous and more expensive than you know the Type 57 model, whose chassis is designed entirely by his son.

During the Second World War, Ettore encountered two family deaths. First of his son Jean Bugatti, on 11 August 1939 at the age of 30 years. Jean died during a Type 57 tank body racer driving test near the Molsheim factory. He collided with a tree while trying to escape from a drunken cyclist who hit the track. Shortly thereafter, Ettore’s wife Barbara also died in 1944.

World War II devastated the factory in Molsheim, and the company lost control over the property. During this time, Ettore remarried with Genevieve Marguerit Delcuze in 1946 and had a son and a daughter with her. Bugatti planned a new factory in Levalovice in Paris to produce a range of new cars.

Death

A successful entrepreneur and great designer of automobile Ettore Bugatti passed away in Paris on the 21st of August 1947 at American Hospital affected by the paralysis of his mental faculties. He was buried in Dorlisheim in the Bugatti family plot near Moleshim.

Difference Between Petrol and Diesel Engine

The engine which uses petrol to run is called a petrol engine while the one using diesel to run is called diesel engine.

Diesel and Petrol Engine

Diesel engine, any ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) in which the air is compressed to a high enough temperature to ignite the diesel oil injected into the cylinder, where expansion and combustion energize a piston.

A Petrol engine is an Internal Combustion Engine in which the spark ignition is fitted. In this engine fuel and air are usually mixed after compression. The former mixture was formerly used in a carburetor, but now it is done by electronically controlled fuel injection.

Diesel and petrol engines are the main engines in the automobile industry nowadays, and both are internal combustion engines. The diesel engine uses a compression ignition technology to ignite the fuel. In a diesel engine, fuel is injected into the compression chamber under high pressure and it compresses into the compression chamber.

While in a petrol engine, air and petrol are mixed in the carburetor and it enters the cylinder. In diesel engines and petrol engines, different technology uses which is called spark ignition technology. It has a spark plug, and after each compression stroke, there will be spark ignition. A diesel engine takes less fuel than the petrol engine. Diesel is more dangerous from the standpoint of solid particles thrown out from diesel engines suspended in the air. It causes some respiratory issues because it has a tendency to accumulate in our lungs. The smoothness of the petrol engine is a strong advantage, favored by people.

Diesel Engine v/s Petrol Engine

  • The petrol engine works on the Otto cycle while the diesel engine works on the diesel cycle.
  • Diesel is used as fuel in this engine which is a non-volatile fuel, wherein petrol engine the fuel is highly volatile (volatile mean; the liquid solution which vaporized automatically when it contact with the air).
  • The petrol engine is fitted with a spark plug while the diesel engine is fitted with a fuel injector.
  • Petrol engines are commonly used in lightweight vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, scooters, etc. Diesel engines are used in heavy vehicles such as buses, trucks, etc.

The Mercedes car was owned by Karl Benz (Carl in french). He was the German engineer and businessman who designed the world’s first internal combustion engine automobile. Karl was born on the 25th of November 1844 in Muhlburg, Karlsruhe, Germany in a poor family. His full name was Karl Friedrich Michael Vaillant.

His father Mr. Johann George Benz was passed away when Karl was only two years old. He passed away in a railway accident. After the father’s death, the whole burden of the house and Karl’s care was on his mother Mrs. Josephine Vaillant’s shoulders. She tried to provide him the best education.

Education of Karl Benz

Karl studied at the local grammar school in Karlsruhe and was an eccentric student. In 1853, at the age of nine, he started in a scientifically oriented Lyceum. Then he enrolled in poly-technical university and studied under the Ferdinand Redtenbacher.

Karl originally focused his studies on locksmithing but eventually followed his father’s footsteps toward locomotive engineering. At the age of fifteen in 1860 he took the admission in the University of Karlsruhe after passing the entrance exam. At the age of 19, he was graduated from the university on 9 July 1864. 

Karl Benz Dream

Karl was fond of riding his bicycle, and he dreamed of making a fully mechanized automobile, or “horseless carriage”. He worked in a number of engineering jobs but found none that satisfied him. He took seven years of professional training in several companies. Training began at Karlsruhe with two years of various jobs at a mechanical engineering company. Later he shifted toward Mannheim to work as a draftsman and designer in a scales factory and in 1868 he went to Pforzheim to work for a bridge construction company. 

Karl’s Discoveries and works

In 1871 in Mannheim, he founded an Iron Foundry and Sheet Metal Workshop with his partner August Ritter. Business went into trouble. The first year of the venture was a complete disaster. Ritter became unreliable and the local authorities seized the business. Then he bought Ritter’s share in the company using a dowry provided by his fiancée, Bertha Ringer’s father.

Karl and Bertha were married on 20 July 1872 and had five children: Eugen, Richard, Clara, Thilde and Ellen

Despite such commercial misfortune, Carl Benz led the development of new engines. Karl began to develop various parts of the vehicle that he had imagined. including ignition, spark plugs, gear, carburetor, water radiator, and clutch. He focused all his efforts on creating a reliable gasoline two-stroke engine. On December 31, 1878, Karl abolished its two-stroke engine on New Year’s Eve, and in 1879 a patent was provided for it.

His invention was amazing but the problem shows its usefulness to the world. This type of thing was never there before and people saw no use for it, nor did they find it practical. This situation was dealt with tactfully by Bertha; In 1888, he threw the car into his mother’s house in Pforzheim. Traveling a 106 kilometers distance.

It was done without her husband’s information and she only informed her safe arrival through telegram when she reached. This was the first long-distance journey that was ever tried and changed public opinion about the safety and practicality of the means of transportation. New directors recommended that Karl should make less expensive automobiles for mass production. In 1893, Karl Benz made Victoria a two-passenger automobile with a 3-hp engine, which can reach a top speed of 11 mph and a pivot front axle powered by a roller-chained tiller for steering.

Karl and Bertha started a series of companies at the beginning of 1900 and maintained their position as major automobile producers in Europe. By 1904, Benz and Cie had sales of 3,480 automobiles and the company was the leading manufacturer of automobiles. By the 1920s, however, there was intense competition between Benz and Daimler- the Mercedes engine manufacturers. The cost of production was rising due to inflation and sales were increasing for both companies. 

In 1924, the two companies signed a “Mutual Interest of Agreement”, which led to joint production, marketing, purchasing, and advertising efforts, but each company still retained its own brand name. Finally, in 1926, the two companies merged with Daimler-Benz and started producing Mercedes-Benz cars, as we know them today.

Benz’s sons, Eugen and Richard, left Benz & Cie in 1903. But Richard returned to the company in 1904 as a designer of passenger vehicles.

Karl Benz became a board member of the newly established company and remained for the remainder of his life. 

Karl & Bertha Benz Death

The merger proved beneficial. In 1927, the number of units was tripled to 7,918 and diesel line was started for truck production. In 1928 Mercedes Benz SS was entered.

At the age of 84 on April 4, 1929, Karl Benz died from Bronchial Inflammation in his lungs at home in Ladenburg. At the age of 95 until her death on 5 May 1944, Bertha Benz lived in her last home. Other family members lived in the house for thirty more years. Benz Homes is now designated as Historic and is used as a scientific meeting facility for a non-profit foundation.
