This was the single car that was manufactured and sold in 12.5 million dollars.

Engine Cooling System in Automobiles & How it Work

Continuously running a car or an automobile can heat up the engine, and reach up to its extreme position beyond your thinking. According to the study, in engine cylinders the temperature of the burning gases can reach up to 1773.15K – 2273.15K (1500°C – 2000°C). It is more than the temperature and Melting Point of Platinum (1768°C) and Titanium (1668°C), which can oxidize the lubrication oil inside the engine and deposit carbon on the surface. 

The amount of heat delivered to the cylinder walls is too high. If the heat is not released from the cylinder, then, it will the piston, high fuel consumption, pre-ignition, and burning of lubricants, etc.

Only 30% of heat is used by the engine to convert into mechanical work, where 30% heat is useless and 40% heat exhausted by the exhaust fans. Not all heat generated by fuel combustion engine cylinders. It converts the heat into useful power in the crankshaft. Thus to remove the excess heat from the engine cylinder a cooling system is used.

A system in the engine which is used to maintain the temperature is known as the cooling system of the engine. When the engine is hot, it must remove the heat at a rapid rate. At the beginning of the engine, the engine cooling should be very slow so that the different working parts can reach their operating temperature in a few time.

Types of cooling systems in Cars

Two types of cooling systems are used in the engine.

  1. Air Cooling System
  2. Water Cooling System

Car Air Cooling System

Car Air Cooling System

Air cooling systems are used in small engines up to 15–20 kW. In these types of systems, the heat conducted by the outermost parts of the engine is radiate and the air is driven away from the stream. An air-cooled engine is simpler to create than a water-cooled engine because heat is transferred directly from the cylinder and head to the air.

When the automobile is normally driven at sufficient speed to provide sufficient wind speed to transfer heat. The whole cooling system is only the fins on the air-cooled engine. The air-cooled engine has a fan or blower, to improve the airflow in the rear of the wings adequately, with the small or slow movement of air.

As you know the air cooling system usually uses in a small automobile such as scooters, motorcycles, small car engines and it also provides in some small industrial engines, where the forward speed of the machine gives good velocity to cool the engine. 

Air Cooling System Advantages

  • It has low manufacturing prices.
  • It doesn’t require high maintenance.
  • This doesn’t contain liquid coolant, so there will be no problem like leakage and freezing.
  • The engine has light in weight because it has no cooling pipe radiator, fan pump, and liquid cooling jacket.
  • Installation, assembling, disassembling of the engine is easy and simple.

Air Cooling System Disadvantages

  • The cooling of the engine is non-uniformly.
  • In comparison to the water cooling system, it is less efficient.
  • This generates aerodynamic noises.
  • It can only be used for short-sized engines, because of its small capacity for heat wastage.

In the water cooling system, water is circulated via the water jacket around each valve seat, valve stems and combustion chamber. The water-cooled engine block and cylinder head have reciprocating cooling channels. All channels at the top of the cylinder head converted to a single outlet.

This removes excessive heat generated in the engine and protects it from overheating and keeps the engine at working temperature for efficient and economical work.

The water continuously moves by a centrifugal water pump which is operated by V-belt from the pulley on the engine crankshaft. It drives hot coolant from the engine to the radiator, a form of the heat exchanger. After passing from the radiator, water is poured into the drain and the water is pumped through the cylinder inlet route.

Parts in Water Cooling System

(1) Water Pump:

This is a centrifugal type pump. It is located at the front of the cylinder block and is usually driven by means of a belt. This type of pump consists of the following parts:

  1. body or casing
  2. impeller (rotor)
  3. shaft
  4. bearings, or bush
  5. water pump seal
  6. pulley

The bottom of the radiator is connected to the suction side of the pump. The power is transmitted to the pump spindle from a pulley at the end of the crankshaft. Seals of various designs are incorporated in the pump to prevent loss of coolant from the system.

(2) Radiator:

The main purpose of the radiator is to cool down the water received from the engine. The radiator consist of three parts:

  1. Upper tank
  2. Lower tank
  3. Tube

Hot water from the upper tank, which comes from the engine, flow in the downward direction through the tubes. The heat contained in the hot water is conducted to the copper fins present around the tubes. An overflow pipe, connected to the upper tank, permits excess water or steam to escape. There are three types of radiators:

  1. Gilled tube radiator- It is the oldest type of radiator, although it is still in use. In this, water flows inside the tubes. Each tube has a large number of annular rings or fins pressed firmly over its outside surface.
  2. Tubular radiator- The only difference between a gilled tubes radiator and a tubular one is that in this case there are no separate fins for individual tubes. The radiator vertical tubes pass through thin fine copper sheets.
  3. Honeycomb or cellular radiator- The cellular radiator consists of a large number of individual air that is surrounded by water. In this, the blockage of any passage affects only a small part of the cooling surface. However, in the tubular radiator, if one tube becomes clogged, the entire cooling effect is lost.
(3) Fan:

The fan is generally placed on the water pump pulley, although in some engines it is attached directly to the crankshaft. A fan helps to solve two purposes in the cooling system of an engine.

  1. The fan draws atmospheric air through the radiator and thus increases the efficiency of the radiator in cooling hot water.
  2. Throws fresh air over the outer surface of the engine, which takes away the heat conducted by the engine parts and thus increases the efficiency of the entire cooling system
(4) Antifreeze Mixture:

In order to prevent the water in the cooling system from freezing, some chemical solutions which are known as anti-freeze solutions are mixed with water. In cold areas, if the engine is kept without this solution for some time, the water may freeze and expand leading to damage in the cylinder block, cylinder head, pipes and/or radiators. The boiling point of the anti-freeze solution should be as high as that of water. An ideal mixture should easily dissolve in water, be reasonably cheap and should not deposit any foreign matter in the jacket pipes and radiator.

(5) Thermostat Valve:

It is a kind of check valve which opens and closes with the effect of temperature. It is fitted in the water outlet of the engine. During the warm-up period, the thermostat is closed and the water pump circulates the water throughout the cylinder block and cylinder head. When the normal operating temperature is reached, the thermostat valve opens and allows hot water to flow towards the radiator. Standard thermostats are designed to start opening at 70 to 75°C and they fully open at 82°C. High-temperature thermostats, with permanent anti-freeze solutions. start opening at 80 to 90°C and fully open at 92°C. There are three types of thermostats: (a) bellow type, (b) bimetallic type and (c) pellet type.

  1. Bellow type valve: Flexible bellows are filled with alcohol or ether. When the bellows are heated, the liquid vaporizes, creating enough pressure to expand the bellows. When the unit is cooled, the gas condenses. The pressure reduces and the bellows collapse to close the valve.
  2. Bimetallic type valve: This consists of a bimetallic strip. The unequal expansion of two metallic strips causes the valve to open and allows the water to flow in the radiator.
  3. Pellet type valve: A copper wax pellet expands when heated and contracts when cooled. The pellet is connected to the valve through a piston, such that on the expansion of the pellet, it opens the valve. A coil spring closes the valve when the pellet contracts.

Types of Water Cooling System

  1. Thermosyphon Cooling System
  2. Impeller Circulation Cooling System
  3. Pump Circulation Cooling System
  4. Pressurized Cooling System 
(1) Thermosyphon Water Cooling System:

This system works on the principle that the hot water has lower density and rises up, and cold water is being heavier that goes down.

In these types of systems, the radiator kept at the upper level than the engine for easy flow of water towards the engine. This is how hot water in the water jacket rises and goes over the radiator. From where it passes and cools, and is collected in the bottom tank. In these systems, the rate of supply is too low.

(2) Impeller Circulation Cooling System:

This is an updated version of the thermosyphon cooling system. The main motive of the impeller cooling system is to provide the right regulation, capable of the maximum engine cooling pump efficiency. And it is all the same except that it has a small impeller unit powered by the engine to increase the circulation rate of water.

(3) Pump Circulation Water Cooling System:

This system has the same construction as the thermosyphon cooling system except that it uses a centrifugal pump for circulating water in a water jacket and radiator.

It is a modern system of water cooling in which water is circulated effectively by cylinder block to the radiator. And come back via a centrifugal pump driven by the engine V-belt.

(4) Pressurized Water Cooling System:

This is an updated version of the pump circulation cooling system. In this, you will get the special radiator cap with a spring-loaded pressure valve and a vacuum valve. The cap becomes gas-tight when the engine gets heat, water vapor is formed on the cap.  

Therefore a boiling point of water is raised in the system. So that the working temperature of the engine also increases, higher temperature gives better thermal efficiency.

As the coolant temperature increases, the setpoint of the variable pressure relief valve. Also, increases and the system relief pressure automatically varies with the coolant temperature over a range of pressures whose upper limit is enough greater than the set point of the relief valve in the pressure cap so that the maximum system operating pressure is still finite by the pressure cap.

Water Cooling System Advantages

  • The water-cooling system is efficient as compared to the air-cooling system.
  • Cylinder, cylinder head, and valve’s uniforming cooling, it is different from the air cooling system.
  • Water-cooled engines have lower fuel consumption than air-cooled engines.
  • Water-cooled engines do not require a more frontal area.
  • If we install a water cooling system, there is no need for an engine on the front end of the moving automobile.
  • The cooling system can be easily located anywhere in the car. In some vehicles, it is at the rear, while in air-cooled engines, this is not possible.
  • The engine is less noisy than an air-cooled engine, as it has water for soaking noise.

Water Cooling System Disadvantages

  • The water cooling system needs pure water to work properly.
  • It totally depends on the supply of water.
  • The water pump which supplies the water absorbs a lot of energy.
  • In the case of cooling system failure, the engine may suffer severe damage.

The original name of Ettore Bugatti was Ettore Arco Isidoro Bugatti. Ettore was a great Italian-French entrepreneur and automobile designers like Karl Benz and Ferruccio Lamborghini. He was born in Milan, Italy on the 15th of September in 1881. 

His Family

Ettore Bugatti belonged to an artistic family. Because his father Carlo Bugatti and his mother Teresa Lorioli both were Art Nouveau Furniture & Jewelry Designer, his younger Rembrandt Bugatti was a famous animal sculpture, and his father Giovanni Luigi Bugatti was a good architect and sculptor. While Ettore himself became an engineer and designer of luxurious automobiles.

Early Life and Career

In 1898 at the age of 17, he joined the bicycle and tricycle manufacturing company of Preneti and Stucci for the internship, where he made his first vehicle, a motorized tricycle operated by two engines made by De Dion for his first race. It was a circle trip from Verona to Mantua and back to Verona.

This extraordinary feat was soon followed by his first automobile in 1900. The outstanding construction method had been supported by Count Gulinelli, who saw the talent that the young engineer associate degree future manufacturing business was developing from such an early age. The project also won the young Ettore Award.

Ettore’s talent was also recognized by others, so on July 2, 1901, he got the job of technical director at the De Dietrich plant. Ettore Bugatti evolved a second prototype which was an award-winning exhibition at the Milan Trade Fair in the spring of 1901. In 1907, Bugatti was nominated as a Production Director with Detz.

During World War I

After the completion of the project in 1909, he ended his contract with Deutz. Despite being born in Italy, Bugatti owns his famous automobile company, the Automobiles E. Bugatti in Molsheim in the town of Germany at the Alsace region where he began manufacturing of the Bugatti T13. 

At that time the Alsace was German territory, it became French in 1919 and was annexed by Germany during World War II and later occupied by France in 1944 and he got the french citizenship in 1947. So that’s why Ettore Buggati is known as the Italian-French entrepreneur.

During the subsequent years, the recently established Bugatti automobile producing continued to expand, Ettore conjointly developing many alternative further projects together with the Bebe model for Peugeot. Bugatti style licenses were conjointly bought by Diatto in Torino, Rabag from Düsseldorf and Crossley from Manchester, Great Britain.

When the First World War began, the Bugatti moved back to Milan and then Paris with his family. While displaced from his home in Alsace in World War I. Bugatti started design airplane engines with 8 and 16 cylinders. During the wars, Ettore Bugatti designed a successfully motorized railcar dubbed the Autorel Bugatti and won a government contract to make an airplane, the Model 100.

The Type 13, which was sold between 1910 and 1920, had a 1.6L engine and a 4-valve head that was personally designed by Ettore. The car gets the second position in 1911 at Le Mans in a seven-hour-long race. His cars won him at Le Mans in 1920 and Brescia in 1921, winning three times thereafter. The winning streak continues, reaching over 400 victories by 1925.

Car Models

There are some of the initial car models of Bugatti.

  • Type 2 cars: In 1901, Bugatti launch his first car at an international exhibition in Milan. He built a car – Type 2 – with the help of Gulinelli Brothers and it won an award from the French Automobile Club. However, this project fell through when one of the Gulinelli brothers died. In the end, the license to produce a car sold to the company De Dietrich in Niederbronn, Alsace.
  • Type 5 cars: In 1903, the first racing car was designed by Bugatti. The chain-driven car was an upgraded version of the Gulinelli car, with a 12.9-liter displacement and a chassis with a tubular frame to circulate coolant.
  • Type 10/13 cars: Type 10 is the first “Pur Sang” developed by Bugatti. Fitted with the four-cylinder engine with a 1.3-liter displacement. IN 1910, the first machinery was delivered to Molsheim and production began on the eight-valve car. The production of Type 10 cars continued till 1914.
  • Type 18 cars: Type 18 had a four-cylinder, five-liter engine with a power output of 100Hp and a chain driver. The famous french pilot Roland Garros owned one of this extremely powerful racing car for when he needs to travel through the road.
  • Type 13 cars: The 16 value engine of type 13 was developed before the First World war. Production begins in Malsheim before the war and resumed in 1919 and proved extremely successful. Various versions with different chassis lengths were produced until 1926 the type- 15, 17, 22, and 23. The car was nicked name “Brescia” after winning the top four spots.
  • Type 28 cars: type 28 was built as a prototype in 1921, but a large number of a patent that was applied for paved the way for all subsequent Bugatti developments, especially the three-liter, eight-cylinder engine that appeared in this form for the first time.
  • Type 29/30 cars: The type 29/30 was Bugatti’s first eight-cylinder racing car. With a two-liter displacement, three valves per cylinder and an overhead camshaft, the engine achieve a power output of 80 hp. The car was fitted with the hydraulic braking system and boosted a revolutionary shape.
  • Type 30 TOURER: Bugatti’s first touring car was the type 30. Over 600 units were produced and sold between 1922 and 1926. Bugatti car was always designed to be suitable for racing, the meaning of type 30 could be used on both roads and racing tracks.
  • Type 32 cars: Bugatti entered the revolutionary-looking racing car in the french grant Prix in 1923 too. That year race was held on the tour. Bugatti used the body shell with a wing-shaped cross-section. However, the small wheelbase made it difficult to control, while the shape of the car tended to generate lift rather than downfall, So there is no surprise that the Bugatti managed no more than a third-place finish.
  • Type 35 cars: the Year 1924 was a Bugatti “Golden age”; production began on the success full type 35 race car. Ettore Bugatti introduces several innovations such as the striking horse shape of the radiator grille and the aluminum wheel. Type 35 become the most successful racing car of all time. No car was as fast, beautiful and safe as the eight-cylinder type 35 car built by Bugatti.
  • Type 37 cars: In 1926, 1.5-liter Brescia was succeeded by the car with the chassis and the body of type 35 and a small 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine. This car was dubbed the type 37. At first glance, the engine looks like a four-cylinder version of type 28. Like the type 28, it had a plain bearing crankshaft instead of the racing crankshaft like the one used in type 35.

Decline of Bugatti

Beginning in 1933, Bugatti began to build railcars using Royale engines and other car parts. During the 1950s, a total of 85 railway personnel were created. His son Jean was already actively involved in the company and he was a very talented engineer.

Ettore Bugatti is the only car manufacturer that managed to combine tradition, innovation, and creativity into just one car model. In 1934, Ettore began producing the infamous and more expensive than you know the Type 57 model, whose chassis is designed entirely by his son.

During the Second World War, Ettore encountered two family deaths. First of his son Jean Bugatti, on 11 August 1939 at the age of 30 years. Jean died during a Type 57 tank body racer driving test near the Molsheim factory. He collided with a tree while trying to escape from a drunken cyclist who hit the track. Shortly thereafter, Ettore’s wife Barbara also died in 1944.

Henry Smolinski was a Northrop-trained engineer who quit his job to begin Advanced Vehicle Engineers, an organization targeted on transfer flying cars to market. Henry Smolinski was the inventor of the first flying car and he died in it. Since last year, scientists have been trying to correct an actual flying car – which is the best. An incomplete car has caused a lot of trouble in the past.

There are a lot of companies working on flying cars and Toyota intends to use its SkyDrive machine at the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Aska, a dual-purpose vehicle designed each to drive on roads and to fly through the air, therefore you’ll be able to lift yourself over the snarl-up. Aska will be the size of a large SUV when on the road and fits three passengers. Drone flying and navigation technology joint with the increasing urban crowd has begun to change people’s assumptions about what is possible.

These car doesn’t need a runway like airplanes. Fans that are enclosed within the wings and piercing the body of the vehicle themselves will make the aircraft stand upright.  After takeoff, rear-facing fans will push it ahead so that the wings produce lift and the car can fly longer distances more efficiently than a more drone-like design. The car can fly longer distances more efficiently than more drones.

In general, two types of flying cars have been developed. First, “fixed wings flying”. It is like a small plane with collapsible wings, which can be used to avoid traffic jams and travel on the road when approaching the destination.

Another one is, “Rotar-wing flying cars” or you say small helicopter. The wings can be folded on landing and the car can be driven on the road as well.

Its electric motors are powered by batteries that can be recharged with a conventional fuel motor to increase range.

How Safe?

The likely answer right now is “not safe” as with all early-stage technology. Companies are working breathlessly to make this project “Safe enough” in the hope of convincing the government that the vehicle can be entrusted with human lives.

The future flying car provides a double boost, first from flying at an average speed of 100 km/h and second by taking the straightest path. For example, approximately to travel 10 km it will take 30 minutes when the traffic is freely flowing.

If we use the flying car (and there is a flying pad) then it will take only 7 minutes.

How easy?

There are lots of things about flying cars that are hard but, some problem becomes easier to handle.

There is a lot of space available for the car when you have access to a flying car, as long as a navigation problem becomes easy.

Driving the car several meters above the ground which means you have less traffic problem. You also don’t have to build expensive road infrastructure.

For self-driving flying cars, moving into the sky actually makes some aspects of planning and traffic control easier.

Advantages of the Flying Car

There are some advantages to flying cars.

Disadvantages of the Flying Car

Flying cars are really good but they have disadvantages also.

  • To fly a car in the air it should not be weighty. In a car, not more than two or three people can ride at the same time.
  • You have to pay more money for the ride than other public transports because it requires more good maintenance.
  • As we told you to operate a flying car a person should good driver and certified pilot. So anyone could not get the license easily.
  • For the flying vehicle, we also need Air Traffic Police.
  • Flying cars may be good for humans to save time and travel easily. But these cars will affect the small birds. Like Sparrow and Pigeons who can not fly high can die after collision with the cars or these species can become extinct.
  • It required take-off and landing infrastructure which can cost very high.
  • Due to the collision with birds, it also can cause dangerous accidents for us too.

Difference Between Petrol and Diesel Engine

Do you know diesel and petrol are different fuels? Everybody knows. These fuels came out after the filtration of Crude oil. But we would not discuss the fuels here. Here we will tell you why diesel and petrol use in different engines. Petrol and diesel engines are classified on the basis of the respective fuels used by these engines. The engine which uses petrol to run is called a petrol engine while the one using diesel to run is called diesel engine.

So we like to discuss the diesel and petrol engine here and the differences between them.

Diesel and Petrol Engine

Diesel engine, any ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) in which the air is compressed to a high enough temperature to ignite the diesel oil injected into the cylinder, where expansion and combustion energize a piston. The diesel engine is also known as a compression engine. It is named after Rudolf’s engine.

The diesel engine can be made to run on an alternative and renewable source of energy such as Biodiesel with little or no modification. Biodiesel generally refers to used vegetable oil that has been used for cooking and it can also be recycled and treated so that it can be used to power diesel cars.

A Petrol engine is an Internal Combustion Engine in which the spark ignition is fitted. In this engine fuel and air are usually mixed after compression. The former mixture was formerly used in a carburetor, but now it is done by electronically controlled fuel injection.

Diesel and petrol engines are the main engines in the automobile industry nowadays, and both are internal combustion engines. The diesel engine uses a compression ignition technology to ignite the fuel. In a diesel engine, fuel is injected into the compression chamber under high pressure and it compresses into the compression chamber.

Diesel engine uses compression ignition, which can quickly ruin the gas engine and because they have come from a workhorse heritage, they tend to be reliable and required less care as compared to the petrol engine.

The output of the diesel and petrol engines is measured in terms of horsepower and torque. Horsepower is a measure of power, while torque is the measure of an engine twisting force on the driveline. A big amount of both are great, but if you have a lot of horsepower with little torque than your vehicle is going to be slow. Its torque which helps to get things moving, that is why diesel engines are used in big vehicles such as trucks.

While in a petrol engine, air and petrol are mixed in the carburetor and it enters the cylinder. In diesel engines and petrol engines, different technology uses which is called spark ignition technology. It has a spark plug, and after each compression stroke, there will be spark ignition.

A diesel engine takes less fuel than the petrol engine. Diesel is more dangerous from the standpoint of solid particles thrown out from diesel engines suspended in the air. The diesel engine doesn’t have a spark plug, that it intakes the air and compresses it and it injects the fuel directly into the combustion chamber which may cause some respiratory issues because it has a tendency to accumulate in our lungs. The smoothness of the petrol engine is a strong advantage, favored by people.

Diesel Engine v/s Petrol Engine

  • The petrol engine works on the Otto cycle, which consists of two isochoric processes and two isentropic processes while the diesel engine works on the diesel cycle.
  • Diesel is used as fuel in this engine which is a non-volatile fuel, wherein the petrol engine the fuel is highly volatile (volatile mean; the liquid solution which vaporized automatically when it contact with the air).
  • The petrol engine is fitted with a spark plug while the diesel engine is fitted with a fuel injector.
  • Petrol engines are commonly used in lightweight vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, scooters, etc. Diesel engines are used in heavy vehicles such as buses, trucks, etc.
  • Petrol engines need repeatedly overhauling, wherein the diesel engine overhauling occurs after a very long time.
  • The petrol engine maintenance cost is lower than the diesel engine.
  • In the diesel engine more power is produced due to a high compression ratio (15 to 25) wherein the petrol engine has a lower compression ratio ( 6 to 10) so it produces less power than the diesel engine.
  • The thermal efficiency in a diesel engine is 40% and in a petrol engine, it is 26%.
  • In the petrol engine, the compression is about 10 bar and in diesel engines, the compression is about 35 bar.
  • In a diesel engine, the ignition is caused by the heat generated during the compression stroke by a high compression ratio. Hence it is called a compression ignition (CI) engine. In a petrol engine, the spark plug is generated by the spark plug into the chamber plug so the ignition is caused by a spark from an external source, hence it is called a spark ignition (SI) engine.
  • Diesel engine is more efficient, car can get incredible mileage out of them whereas in the car with a petrol engine are less efficient.
  • Due to the high compression ratio, the diesel engine has large vibration so it produces a loud noise. Due to the low compression ratio, the petrol engine has low vibrations so it produces low noise.
  • Diesel engine fuel efficiency is better than the petrol engine.
  • Diesel engines turbocharged more easily. 
  • Diesel fuel doesn’t consist of lead and emission from regulated pollutants such as carbon monoxide. However, diesel engine does create high emission of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter as compared to the petrol car, which is considered as carcinogenic (carcinogenic simply means the thing which causes cancer). Despite the fact that diesel provides a better fuel economy, petrol burns cleaner than diesel, this is the reason why diesel cars lack behind petrol cars in terms of usage.
  • The high compression of gases within the cylinder, diesel engines are built extremely hard and will generally last longer than their petrol counterparts. They can also go longer between maintenance.
  • Diesel engines torque is high where the petrol engine torque is lower than the diesel engines.
  • Diesel engines are also low-speed engines due to heavyweight and due to heterogeneous combustion. Petrol engines are also high-speed engines due to lightweight and homogeneous combustion.
